The World Firefighters Games; Liverpool, England
25 August to 3 September, 2008

The 10th World Firefighters Games opened with over 3000 competitors mustering for the athlete's march led by the The Queen’s Irish Guards and pipe & drum band. The march ended at the Kings Dock where 3000 spectators were massed to welcome Firefighters from all over the world.

During the 'Welcome to Liverpool' ceremony, all the competitors and spectators took part in a world record (achieving) attempt at singing, “Hey Jude”. This was in collaboration with the Mathew Street Festival and involved several other points across the city were there was reportedly another 100,000 people gathered to join in.

The official opening ceremony took place in the Echo Arena in the evening, which also saw the final of the junior firefighting team contest.

At all of the events you could see the brotherhood of firefighters with the friendship and goodwill coming to the fore and it was here that new and old acquaintances were made, once again proving that if you bring Firefighters together in one place, the magic of friendship rises above all other hardships and conflicts whether local, national or international.

Toughest Firefighter Alive

1 event in a climbing activity using local terrain. eg 21 floor stair climb wearing breathing apparatus.
